This Tadka Dal is a typical and delicious masoor dal Gujarati Recipe. This Masoor Dal Tadka  is prepared at all houses in the Northern part of India. This Recipe also has good masoor dal nutrition. This Tadka or tempering gives better aroma of the spices and gives delicious taste to dish. It is also known as  gujarati khatti meethi dal. Check how to make the masoor dal


Ingredients

  • 7 cups water
  • 1 1/2 cup masoor dal red lentils
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder haldi
  • salt as required
  • 1 tbsp red chilli powder
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons coriander powder
  • 65 grams jaggery crushed
  • 1 medium tomato chopped
  • 5 green chillies slit
  • 7 Kokums washed
  • 2 tablespoons coriander leaves chopped

For Tempering

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds rai
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds jeera
  • 2 whole dry red chillies
  • 1 sprig curry leaves kadi patta
  • a large pinch of asafoetida hing

Instructions

  • Rinse the red lentils / masoor dal in water a couple of times. Keep rinsing till the water becomes clear.
  • Add it to the pressure cooker with 4 cups water. Add turmeric powder and salt. Stir once. Now cook for 3 minutes after getting the full pressure. Allow it to cool down naturally.
  • Then open the cooker and mash dal to blend with liquid.
  • Place the cooker with masoor dal on high heat. Add 3 cups water (remaining) and other ingredients except the ingredients in the tempering section. 
  • Then Reduce the heat and cook for 5 mins stirring occasionally.
  • Now on the other side take the frying pan, heat oil for 1 minute. Add mustard and cumin seeds. When they start crackling, add red chillies, curry leaves and asafoetida (hing). Stir for a few seconds and pour over the masoor dal.
  • Cook for a few seconds more, stir well and the Gujarati Masoor Tadka Dal is ready to be served.
