Ingredients

For the Chocolate Sponge Cake

  • 4 large eggs (room temperature)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder (unsweetened)
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp baking powder
  • A pinch of salt

For the Filling (Whipped Cream Filling)

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 3 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

  • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Optional Decoration

  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Fresh berries
  • Meringue mushrooms
  • Chocolate shavings

Instructions

1. Make the Sponge Cake

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Line a 10×15-inch pan with parchment paper.
  • Beat eggs and sugar for 5–7 minutes until light and fluffy.
  • Add vanilla.
  • Sift in flour, cocoa, baking powder, and salt. Gently fold in.
  • Spread batter evenly in the pan.
  • Bake for 10–12 minutes, until it springs back when touched.

2. Roll the Cake

  • Place a clean towel on the counter, then dust it with powdered sugar.
  • Turn the hot cake onto the towel.
  • Peel off the parchment paper.
  • Roll the cake up with the towel from the short end.
  • Let it cool completely.

3. Make the Filling

  • Whip cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until stiff peaks form.
  • Keep chilled.

4. Make the Frosting

  • Beat butter until creamy.
  • Add powdered sugar, cocoa, milk, and vanilla.
  • Mix until smooth and spreadable.

5. Assemble the Yule Log

  • Unroll the cooled cake.
  • Spread the whipped cream filling evenly.
  • Roll it back up (without the towel).
  • Cut a small diagonal piece to make a “branch” and attach it with frosting.
  • Cover the cake with chocolate buttercream.
  • Use a fork to make a bark-like texture.
