- Wash the red lentils / masoor dal in water. Add it to the pressure cooker with 4 cups water. Add turmeric powder and salt. Stir once. Now cook for 3 mins after getting full pressure and then let cool down naturally.
- Then open the cooker and mash dal to blend with liquid.
- Place the cooker with dal on high heat. Add remaining water (3 cups) and other ingredients (red chilli powder, coriander powder, jaggery crushed , tomato chopped, green chillies slit, Kokums washed, coriander leaves chopped) except the tempering part. Reduce the heat and cook for 5 mins stirring occasionally.
- For tempering (tadka), heat oil in a pan for 1 min. Add mustard and cumin seeds. When crackling, add red chillies, curry leaves and asafoetida. Stir for a few seconds and pour over dal. Now the Gujarati Masoor Tadka Dal is ready.

Gujarati Masoor Tadka Dal , Red Lentils Recipes
Ingredients
- 7 cups water
- 1 1/2 cup masoor dal red lentils
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder haldi
- salt as required
- 1 tbsp red chilli powder
- 1 1/2 tablespoons coriander powder
- 65 grams jaggery crushed
- 1 medium tomato chopped
- 5 green chillies slit
- 7 Kokums washed
- 2 tablespoons coriander leaves chopped
For Tempering
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds rai
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds jeera
- 2 whole dry red chillies
- 1 sprig curry leaves kadi patta
- a large pinch of asafoetida hing

Instructions
- Rinse the red lentils / masoor dal in water a couple of times. Keep rinsing till the water becomes clear.
- Add it to the pressure cooker with 4 cups water. Add turmeric powder and salt. Stir once. Now cook for 3 minutes after getting the full pressure. Allow it to cool down naturally.
- Then open the cooker and mash dal to blend with liquid.
- Place the cooker with masoor dal on high heat. Add 3 cups water (remaining) and other ingredients except the ingredients in the tempering section.
- Then Reduce the heat and cook for 5 mins stirring occasionally.
- Now on the other side take the frying pan, heat oil for 1 minute. Add mustard and cumin seeds. When they start crackling, add red chillies, curry leaves and asafoetida (hing). Stir for a few seconds and pour over the masoor dal.
- Cook for a few seconds more, stir well and the Gujarati Masoor Tadka Dal is ready to be served.
